Rasnov Citadel

In the upper side of Barsa land, about 15 kilometers far from Brasov and 8 kilometers from Casa Tolstoi, on the old mercantile road that linked, by Bran pass, the old Brasov Citadel to Campulung Muscel, the former capital of Romanian Country, is located Rasnov City, often mentioned in medieval documents as trade fair city.

Being a rural citadel, built in the Middle Ages by Rasnov habitants with refuge and protection purpose against enemy invasions, the citadel's past is closely related to the historical development of the concerned population. Archeological researches talk about an intense dacian-roman life on Barsa Land. Archeological excavations show that cumidavens Dacians lived there in the Dacian period, the main centre being Cumidava Settlement, located on the agricultural territory of Rasnov City, 500 meters far from Barsa River. Roman fort discovered here was built at the beginning of roman domination and lasted approximate until year 250 A.C with the purpose of monitoring and protecting the entrance ways over mountains in Barsa Land, certified by an inscription dated since Emperor Severe Alexander (222-235 A.C.) period, found under the ruins of this fort.

By its geographical position, Roman Fort from Cumidava could survey several acces ways to Transilvania, not only Bran pass but also the one from Rasnoava Valey between Rasnov and Predeal-Busteni.

In early Feudalism Period (X-XIV centuries) at the beginning of Xth century comes into existence voivodships all over Transylvania, led by Menumorut, Glad and Gelu, but besides these, there were also other voivodships, powerful Romanian autonomies, among them also Barsa Land, mentioned in 1211 year in the prerogative given by king Andrew the Second to Teutonic chevaliers, whom colonize Barsa Land. At the beginning of the XVIth century, Romanian community from Rasnov is mentioned in an official census as being led by a prince.

During Teutonic Chevaliers' stay in Barsa Land (1211-1225) here were brought the first Saxon Colonists, a part of them being settled in Rasnov alongside Romanian native population, helping the development of this old settlement.

Due to these continuous connections with Romanian Country, Rasnov City ends up being an important economical and cultural centre and in year 1384 is being built a stone church of Romanian Rasnov habitants community, one of the oldest architectural monuments from Barsa Land.

Reference books show that Rasnov name appears for the first time in 1331 under the Romanian-Slav name of Rosnou, and afterwards as Rosnow (1343), Rasnow (1337) then, Rosinov (1377), Rosarum (1388). The base for Rasnov name is "roz" meaning rose, as well in Latin as in Slav and German, in the Medieval Age the rose being used as the symbol of the city.

In developed Feudal Period (sec. XIV-XVI) Brasov City gets to be the most important economical centre from Transilvania, and besides it, Rasnov becomes the second trade fair from Barsa Land, being mentioned in the medieval documents as"trade fair" having its own judges and jurors.
